A or An?

  • ‘A’ and ‘An’ are different forms of the same word, the indefinite article used before a noun.

Usage

  • ‘A’ precedes the consonant sounds and ‘An’ precedes the vowel sounds, a,e,i,o,u.
  • But when used before the letter ‘H’, it depends on how the ‘H’ is pronounced.
  • When the ‘H’ is silent, use ‘AN’ as in, an honest man, when the ‘H’ is pronounced, use ‘A’, a historical event.
