Oppida

  • Oppida, the singular is Oppidum, were Iron Age hillfort towns, belonging to a Celtic Tribe.
  • The Romans often rebuilt Oppida beside a river, incorporating their organisation to transform it into a Roman civic city.

Municipium of the Second Order (Partial Municipium)

  • The status of a the second order of Municipium was below the first order of Municipium (Full Citizenship) and below a Colonia.
  • This was where the Tribal Oppidum continued under Roman Rule:
    • They did not have not have full Roman Citizenship
    • They were still liable for Taxes and Military Service.
    • They did not have the Right to Vote.
