- Along with Balbinus, Pupienas is famous for being one of the six emperors during the Year of the Six Emperors in 238 CE.
- On 22 April 238 CE, the Roman Senate elected Pupienas and Balbinus as co-emperors, after Gordian I and Gordian II had been eliminated.
- Whilst Balbinus stayed in Rome, Pupienus marched to Ravenna, to meet the challenge from Maximinus Thrax, who was assassinated by his own soldiers.
- However, shortly after Pupienus returned to Rome, he and Balbinus were assassinated by the Praetorian Guard in the Bath house of the Castra Praetoria.
- Gordian III, the grandson of Gordian I, then became Roman emperor at the age of 13.
