Limes Germanicus

  • The Limes Germanicus, also known as the Raetian Limes, was the fortified Roman Frontier with Germania. It had 60 Forts with 900 watchtowers and ran for 353 miles (568 km).
  • Starting from the mouth of the Rhine, it ran up the Rhine towards Mainz, then overland to Regensburg on the Danube. Here it joined the Danube Limes.

The Limes Germanicus consisted of three sections

  • The Lower Germanic Limes:
  • The Upper Germanic Limes:
    • From Rheinbrohl across the Taunus mountains to the river Main. Down the Main to Miltenberg. Then overland to Lorch.
  • The Raetian Limes

The Land corridor

  • The Raetian Limes was the 190 mile (300 km) land corridor between the Rhine at Mainz and the Danube at Regensburg.
  • By 150 CE all the towers and Forts had been rebuilt in stone.

The Four Roman Bridges across the Rhine

Domitian

  • In c. 83 CE, Domitian was responsible for constructing a huge series of fortifications on the Limes Germanicus, from the river Main to the River Neckar.
  • Although there was as yet no physical stone wall like Hadrian's Wall, it consisted of a series of earthen embankments, wooden palisades, watchtowers and forts that were designed to keep the Germanic Tribes outside of the Roman Empire.

Military Road

  • A Roman Road ran along the west bank of the Rhine and connected all the Rhine Forts.
