Persian Royal Road

  • The Persian Empire was controlled via the Persian Royal Road which ran from Susa in the Persian Gulf to Sardis on the Aegean. It consisted of way stations and relays for both horse and foot messengers.

King's Highway

  • Mentioned in The Bible Book of Numbers. Chapter 20: verses 17-21
  • This Caravan Road ran inland from Heliopolis in Egypt via Arabia Petraea and Damascus and Palmyra in Syria to the Euphrates.

Via Maris

  • The Via Maris ran round the coast from Syria, to Egypt via Judaea using the Megiddo Pass.
  • ‘Via Maris’ means ‘Way of the Sea’ in Latin. It formed part of the coastal road around the eastern Mediterranean.
