Premia

  • The Premia was a Pension for the Roman Legionary, paid as a Discharge Bonus (Lump Sum) after 25 years of Service.

Description

  • The Lump Sum was worth 3,800 Denarii when introduced by Augustus (27 BCE-14 CE) and  rose to 8,500 Denarii by the end of the third century CE.
  • A Legionary of the Praetorian Guard, after only 16 years of service, received 5,000 Denarii under Augustus, and an additional Land donation (which was the traditional pension) as well as the military Diploma.
