Limes Moesiae

  • The Limes Moesiae were a series of Roman Defensive Walls constructed in three sections along the Danube Delta to defend Dacia, modern Roumania.
  • They are thought to have been commenced by Trajan (98-117 CE) to defend the Danube.

The Three Sections

  2. Upper Trajan’s Wall in Dacia:
    • North of the Danube, located in Moldova. (Also known as the Greuthungian Wall) It stretched 75 miles (120km) from R. Dniester to the R. Prut. Built c. 110 CE to protect the coastal area from the Danube Delta as far as the City of Tyras.
    • It was a Turf Wall: 75 miles (120km) long, 10-13 ft (3-4m) wide, 32-50 ft (10-15m) thick, with a Trench in front 6-10 ft (2-3m) deep. Currently 18 inches (0.5m) high.
  3. Limes Transalutanus in Dacia, also known as Lower or Southern Trajan’s Wall:
    • North of the Danube and built parallel to the River Olt to its east. It’s length is 146 miles (235 km) and it was started in 107 CE.
