Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

  • The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is a list of monuments compiled by Herodotus and Callimachus of Cyrene. They do not include Roman Monuments which were built much later.
  • Only one of the Seven Wonders has survived up to the present day, and that is the Great Pyramid.

The List according to Herodotus and Callimachus of Cyrene

  1. Statue of Zeus at Olympia (c.435 BCE)
  2. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (c.323 BCE)
  3. Mausoleum of Mausolus at Halicarnassus (350 BCE)
  4. Colossus of Rhodes (280 BCE)
  5. Pharos of Alexandria (280 BCE)
  6. Great Pyramid of Giza (c.2,600 BCE The Oldest of these Monuments)
  7. Hanging Gardens of Babylon (c.562 BCE)

The List according to Antipater of Sidon

Monuments missing from the List

  • The reason why other great Monuments, such as the Acropolis, were not included, is because they were built after Herodotus had compiled his list.
  • The Aqueducts of Ancient Rome are often considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the World, but they were also built after the time of Herodotus.

Roman Grand Tour

  • The List is shown in the order that the Buildings and Temples were visited by the wealthy Romans while on the Roman Grand Tour.
  • They were able to visit six of the Seven Wonders which were located around the Mediterranean, with the exception of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon which were located in the Persian Empire.
