2. BRIEF SYNOPSIS

  • Clodius Albinus was the fourth Emperor in the Year of the Five Emperors.
  • In 194 CE he was allied to, and joint Consul with, Septimius Severus, who was fighting Pescennius Niger in the East. During this period he commanded the British Legions and the Spanish Legion.
  • In 196 CE his three British Legions proclaimed him Emperor, and crossed into Gaul.
  • After a brief battle, he made his capital at Lyon in Gallia Lugdunensis. However, he never succeeded in raising the support of the Rhine Legions, who supported Septimius Severus.
  • In 197 CE, Clodius Albinus was killed at the Battle of Lugdunum which involved up to 300,000 soldiers, according to Cassius Dio. He was beheaded, his body was run over by Septimius Severus and the head sent back to Rome.
