Carthaginian Religion

  • The Carthaginians worshipped a Pantheon of Gods whose names are only known through Inscriptions.
  • Unlike the Ancient Egyptian Religion, almost nothing is known of Carthaginian Theology or Ritual.

Baal Hammon

  • The Supreme God was Ball Hammon who was also the Patron of the city of Carthage.
  • Baal Hammon is associated with the Greek Titan God, Cronus.

Tanit

  • Tanit was a virgin Mother Goddess, wife of Baal Hammon, Goddess of War and Fertility. She may possibly have been more important than Baal Hammon.
  • Tanit is associated with the Greek Goddess Hera.

Astarte

  • Astarte or Ishtar was the Goddess of War and Fertility associated with the planet Venus. She later seems to have been assimilated into the Goddess Tanit.
  • She was linked with the Greek Goddess Aphrodite.

Melqart

  • Melqart was the Patron God of the city of Tyre, where there was a Temple of Melqart.
  • He was King of the Underworld and Ruler of the Universe.
  • He was the equivalent of the Greek God Heracles and the Roman God Hercules.

Eshmun

  • God of Health and Healing.
  • Eshmun is associated with the Greek God Asclepius.

Resheph

  • God of War and Thunder.
  • Resheph is associated with the Greek God Apollo.

Kusor

  • God of Knowledge.

Hawot

  • Goddess of Death.
