- Carlisle is a border city with Scotland located on the River Eden in Cumbria. It was the Roman city of Luguvalium, civitas of the Carvetii Tribe.
- To the north of the river Eden there was a Roman Fort in the suburb of Stanwix, which formed part of Hadrian's Wall.
History
- In 72 CE, the Romans erected the first Fort at Carlisle made of wood, south of the river Eden.
- In c. 165 CE, it was replaced by a stone Fort and Carlisle Castle now stands on the site.
