- Nerva became Roman Emperor when the Praetorian Guard assassinated Domitian, and the next day Nerva became the first Roman Emperor to be voted in by the Roman Senate.
- The Praetorian Guard forced Nerva to adopt an heir favourable to them, and he chose the popular army commander, Trajan.
- Nerva died peacefully after less than eighteen months in power. He suffered a stroke and died in his villa, in the Gardens of Sallust, in Rome.
