The Route

  • The Milecastles (80)
    • These existed between the Forts at one Roman mile intervals.
  • The Turrets (158)
    • These are located one third of a Roman mile either side of the milecastles.

The Cumbrian Coast

  • The Milecastles, but not the Wall, continue west around the Cumbrian Coast, dominated by the Fort at Maryport.

Stanegate

  • The Stanegate Road runs parallel to Hadrian's Wall, but south of the rivers Eden and Tyne, whereas Hadrian's Wall runs north of these rivers.
  • The Stanegate was 44 miles (71 km) long and ran between Carlisle and Corbridge.
