Capheaton Treasure

  • The Capheaton Treasure consists of a 6 piece Roman Silver Hoard from the 2nd to 3rd century CE.
  • It was found in the village of Capheaton in Northumberland in 1747 CE and is now located in Room 49 of the British Museum in London.

Description

  • The Hoard only consists of 6 fragments of silver religious vessels which may have been belonged to a temple. The other items in the original Find were melted down.
  • Four of the items are silver handles displaying mythological scenes with MinervaJuno and Mercury, accompanied by Bacchus, Ariadne and scenes from the Twelve Labours of Hercules.
  • The other 2 are the base and fitting for a silver vessel.
