Patria Potestas

  • Patria Potestas meant ‘The Power of the Father’.
  • Under civil Roman Law the Child was the Legal Property of the Father or Paterfamilias.

Description

  • The Father had the Power to sell his children into Slavery. But if the child was sold more than 3 times he was no longer subject to Patria Potestas.
  • The Paterfamilias also held Patria Potestas over his Slaves.
