Puteoli

  • Puteoli was the Roman name for Pozzuoli in the Bay of Naples, Italy.
  • It was the main harbour for the Roman Republic and early Empire.

Alexandrian Grain Fleet

  • The Alexandrian Grain Fleet from Egypt anchored here. The Grain was then transhipped into smaller coastal vessels for the journey up to Ostia next to Rome.
  • The Ships and their owners were Greek, not Roman.

Pozzuoli Roman Amphitheatre

  • This was the third largest Amphitheatre after Rome and Capua.

Villas

  • The wealthy Romans kept summer villas in Puteoli, including the Dictator Sulla who died in his Villa in 78 BCE.

Pozzolana

  • Pozzolana, meaning the dust of Pozzuoli (Puteoli), was a volcanic ash which was used to form Roman Concrete.
  • Pozzolana was exported all over the Roman Empire.
  • The Cupola of the Pantheon was built of concrete using Pozzolana. It remains the largest unreinforced concrete Dome in the world.
