Municipium

  • A Municipium (plural: Municipia) was a city that had been granted self government by the Roman State. It was the lowest level of Local Government.
  • Every Municipium had a similar form of Government to Rome with its own Senate, and hereditary Senators drawn from the local elite, but the Public Officials were nominated by Rome instead of being elected.

    • Every Municipium had a similar form of Government to Rome with its own Senate or Ordo Decurionum (Town Council), with hereditary Senators or Officials drawn from the local elite, but the Executive Public Officials were nominated by Rome instead of being elected.
    • Executive: Four Officials elected annually, 2 Duumvirs and 2 Aediles advised by a Decurion
    • Ordo Decurionum: Town Council
  • Lowest level of Local Government.
    • A Municipium consisted of Munera (Duty Holders) who had obligations towards the Municeps (Citizens).
    • The Grant of Municipium was recognition of the existing Government and its Munera to towards its Citizens with additional Munera due to the City of Rome:
  • Full Latin Rights.
    • Roman Citizenship for every individual born in that city.
    • Civitas Optimo Jure (Citizen’s Rights under Roman Law)
    • The Right to Vote.

Municipium of the Second Order

  • Partial Municipium
    • Such as Tribal Oppida now under Roman Rule.
      • Not full Roman Citizenship
      • Still liable for Taxes and Military Service.
      • No Right to Vote.
