- At the age of 19, Julius Caesar was captured by the Pirates of Cilicia and ransomed.
- After he had been freed, Julius Caesar returned and had all his captors crucified.
Description
- 81 BCE As a young man of 19 years old, Caesar was seized by the Pirates of Cilicia on route from Rome to Rhodes.
- He was ransomed for an extortionate 50 Talents.
- He was held for forty days on the island of Farmaco (Pharmacusa), east of Limnos.
- Here he joked that he would have them all crucified after his release.
- After the ransom had been paid and he was released, Caesar went to Miletus where he hired a fleet of 4 vessels with 500 Legionaries in each boat.
- He then returned to Farmaco, located his 30 captors, capturing 350 in all, and delivering them to Marcus Junius, the Governor of Asia in Pergamun, where they were imprisoned.
- When the Governor hesitated to put them on Trial, Caesar returned to the prison, removed them and had them all crucified. In a display of mercy, to avoid a protracted death, he ordered their throats to be cut.
Pompey and the Pirates
- In 67 BCE, Pompey (106-48 BCE) cleared the Mediterranean of all Pirates.
