Pandora’s Box

• In Greek Mythology, Pandora carried a Jar (sometimes translated as a box) which she was specifically told not to open.
• When Pandora lifted the lid off the jar, War, Sickness, Death and Disease were released. Too late, she closed the lid, but Hope was left behind.

Zeus punishes Prometheus

• Zeus wanted to punish Prometheus for having stolen Fire from the Gods.
• He ordered the creation of Pandora and her box to send affliction to Mankind, and then sent Pandora to Prometheus’ brother.

Everyday Expression

• To open Pandora's Box is a phrase which has come to mean ‘to release a series of problems that cannot be anticipated’.
