Roman Legion List by Number

  • The Roman Legions were all allocated a number usually followed by a Title.

THE ROMAN LEGIONS:

Identically Numbered Legions

  • Some Legions have the same number.
  • This is because during the Roman Civil Wars both sides formed and numbered their own Legions independently.
  • Also, during the Late Empire, new smaller Legions were created, often from an older Legion but with a new Title.

Auxiliaries

  • Each Legion had an Auxiliary Regiment attached to it, under the command of the Legionary Prefect.
  • Auxiliary Regiments carried the title Cohors or Ala instead of Legio.
