- The Vindolanda Tablets are a collection of thousands of Wood Tablets found near the Roman Fort of Vindolanda on the Stanegate.
- They each contain letters written in ink describing the life of Roman soldiers in the Fort of Vindolanda and are dated between 85-102 CE.
Description
- The Fort was built in 85 CE on the Stanegate, a defensive line in Northern England which preceded Hadrian's Wall.
- Most of the Tablets were written between 85-102 CE, and so before Hadrian's Wall was built.
- The Tablets are almost 2,000 years old and are the first recorded writings to be found in Britain.
- They were excavated in 1973 from Vindolanda Roman Fort, and new tablets continue to be excavated every year.
Museums
- The Vindolanda Tablets are held at the British Museum, London, and are on partial display there.
- A selection of the Tablets are also displayed at the Vindolanda Museum known as the Chesterholm Museum.
