Limes Arabicus

  • The Limes Arabicus was a defensive wall that ran north-south from northern Syria down to the Gulf of Aqaba for approximately 930 miles (1,500 km).

History

  • The Limes Arabicus consisted of a line of Defensive Works with major Forts every 60 miles (100 km) and watchtowers built in between, protecting the Province of Arabia Petraea.
  • They were built between 111-114 CE and strengthened between 193-235 CE.
  • The main purpose of the Limes seems to have been to protect the Camel Caravans on the Via Traiana Nova Roman Road, from either Nomadic attacks or massed Nomadic invasion.
