Fossa Mariana

  • The Fossa Mariana was a 16 miles (25km) long Roman Canal built by Marius in c.102 BCE to bypass the shallows of the Rhone and connect Arles in to the sea.
  • Part of the dried bed of the canal still exists and can be seen in Arles today.

Description

  • It began on the Rhone at Arles and ran along the east side of the Rhone Mouth, connecting to the Mediterranean Sea at Fos-sur-Mer, according to Strabo.
