Leptis Magna

History

  • In 193 CE The Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211 CE) was born there, and redeveloped it as the third greatest city in North Africa, after Carthage and Alexandria.
  • Leptis Magna was the main Terminus for the Camel Caravans crossing the Sahara from the kingdoms of the Sahel. The other Terminus was Carthage.
  • Between 1686 and 1708, Louis XIV (1638-1715) directed the French Consul in Tripoli, Claude Lemaire, to send 600 columns from Leptis Magna and ship them to France in order to build the Palace of Versailles and other Palaces in Paris.
  • In 1826 CE, part of a Roman Temple in Leptis Magna was installed in Windsor Great Park. It is located between Blacknest Road and the south shore of Virginia Water, near to the Junction of the A30 and Wentworth Drive.

  • Leptis Magna Museum
    • Located in Leptis Magna, near Khoms, Libya.
    • The museum holds a collection which includes five complete Mosaics comparable to those of Pompeii.
