Civitas

  • The Civitas (plural Civitates), also known as the Civitas Peregrina was a planned Roman town.
  • It was usually the capital of a Tribe in a Roman Province, such as Venta Silurum capital of the Silures in Britannia.

Description

  • The Civitas were Planned Roman towns.
  • They were usually Provincial Market towns, protected by light wooden palisades.
  • The Civitas Council was ruled by an Ordo or Curia which made local Laws that applied to the Peregrini.
  • The Civitas promoted Trade and raised Taxes.
  • It was protected by a Militia which was commanded by a Decurion.
