Active voice

  • The Active voice refers to the subject performing the action.
  • For example: a waiter served the man.

Passive voice

  • The Passive voice refers to the subject in the sentence being acted upon.
  • For example: The man was served by a waiter.

When to use Active or Passive voice

  • Using active voice will put focus on the action.
  • Using passive voice will put focus on the doer of the action.
