Aden - Roman Geek

Aden is a city in Yemen located on the Gulf of Aden approaching the Red Sea.
It was known as ‘Eudaemon’ and mentioned in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (c.50 CE) as part of the Himyarite Kingdom in modern Yemen.

The city was distinctive for having being built in the crater of an extinct volcano.
Originally a port of transhipment, it was already being bypassed by the long distance Red Sea Fleets in the first century CE.
It seems to have declined in importance around 1 CE, according to Strabo who wrote that Augustus cleared the area of Pirates.
