Adriatic

  • The Adriatic is a Sea that lies between Italy and Balkan coasts of Croatia, Albania and Greece.
  • It was known to the Romans as the Mare Superum.

Description

  • The northern sea is shallow, starting at a depth of around 65-130 ft (20-40 m)
  • Further south the depth increases to over 3,930 ft (1,200 m) between Dubrovnik and Bari.

Roman Navy

  • The Sea Lanes of the Adriatic were patrolled by the Roman Praetorian Fleet, the Classis Ravennas, based at Ravenna.
