Aedicula

  • Aedicula (Plural Aediculae) is the diminutive of Aedes, meaning a Temple, and meant a small Roman Shrine containing a Statue or Altar.
  • Christianity later copied the idea, with the Facades of many Cathedrals containing rows of figures in Aedicular frames.

Location

  • Household Aedicula
    • Small statues of the Roman Deities that protected the house, the Lares or Penates.
  • Temple Aedicula
    • Set on a base, surrounded by columns with a pediment on top.
  • Public Buildings Aediculae
    • Triumphal Arches, City Gates (Porta Negra), Public Baths, The Celcus Library in Ephesus.
