Aeneas

  • In Roman Mythology, Prince Aeneas is a Trojan Hero and the first Hero of Rome. He is the forefather of Romulus and Remus.
  • Virgil, through the story of Aeneas, links the myth of Troy to the founding of Rome simultaneously creating a national Founding Myth whilst glorifying Roman values.

Virgil and the Aeneid

  • Virgil describes Aeneas in the Aeneid as the son of Prince Anchises and the Goddess Venus.
  • He is first cousin to King Priam of Troy, second cousin to Priam’s sons, Hector and Paris.
  • After the Fall of Troy, Aeneas avoided death or being enslaved. He gathered together a group of men known as the Aeneads, and escaped to Italy.
  • After a brief stay with Queen Dido at Carthage, King Latinus of Latium welcomed Aeneas and his Trojan army, and invited them to settle in his kingdom.
  • Aeneas is the forefather of Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.
