Aetius of Amida

  • Aetius of Amida (c.430-520 CE) was a Greek Physician known to be a Christian who lived during the 5th and 6th century CE in the Eastern Roman Empire.
  • He was born in Amida, modern Diyarbakir in modern Turkey, and is noted for his outstanding works on Medicine.

Biography

  • Aetius studied at Alexandria, Egypt, the greatest school of medicine of the period.
  • He was probably a Physician in the Byzantine Emperor’s Court since he is referred to in some sources as one of the Emperor’s senior officers.
  • His Books on Medicine, although not original, are the greatest collection from the Ancient World, consisting of Works on Medicine combining Galen and many other now lost authors from the Great Library of Alexandria.
  • He also confirmed that soldiers wore a Tattoo. He also described the process for applying and removing a Tattoo.
