Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh Museum
  • Aldeburgh is a town located on the North Sea coast in the County of Suffolk. It is not to be confused with Aldborough in North Yorkshire.
  • It was the location for one of the Saxon Shore Forts, whose name is unknown. No Remains have been found.

Saxon Shore Forts

  • The Saxon Shore Forts were a chain of Roman Naval Forts in southeastern England that stretched from Portchester to the Wash, whose function was to defend the River estuaries and coastline from Pirate attacks by seaborne invaders.
  • The Forts date to the third century CE and are mentioned in a 4th century CE document known as the Notitia Dignitatum.

History

  • In Old English ‘Olde Burgh’ means Old Fort, and there may have been a Roman Fort defending the entrance to the Alde Estuary.
  • During the Tudor Period there was a thriving shipbuilding industry in Aldeburgh.
  • During the Napoleonic Period, a chain of Martello Towers was built around the southeast coast, of which one still stands at Aldeburgh today.
