  • This everyday expression was made famous by Shakespeare in The Merchant of Venice, Act II, Scene VII.
  • It means that appearances can deceive. However, it was used by Chaucer (c.1400) in The Canon’s Yeoman’s Tale and The House of Fame. It was also used in 1175 by Alain de Lille, a French Monk.
