Altar of Ancient Rome

  • The Altar (Ara) of Ancient Rome, also known as the Ara Pacis, was an Altar created by Augustus (27 BCE-14 CE) to symbolise a new era of Peace after centuries of War.

Ara Pacis

  • The Ara Pacis, meaning the ‘Altar of the Goddess of Peace’, was inaugurated on 30th January in 9 BCE.

Solarium Augusti

  • The Solarium Augusti, also known as the Horologium of Augustus, was a giant sundial in Rome which used the Obelisk of Montecitorio as a gnomon for citizens to tell the time.
  • On the 23rd September, Augustus’ birthday, the shadow fell on the altar of the ‘Ara Pacis’, Altar of the Goddess of Peace.
