Ancient Egyptian Religion

  • The Ancient Religion of Egypt rose to prominence in c.3,100 BCE, with the unification of Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt and the creation of Memphis as the Capital.
  • The Cult of the Pharaoh brought a series of local Deities to national prominence over the centuries, through the building of Great Temple complexes and the Pyramids.

Amun

  • Amun was the king of the all the Gods in the Ancient Egyptian Religion.
  • His centre of worship was the Temple of Amun at Karnak.

The Osiris Myth

  • Osiris
    • The God had a Temple at Abydos.
    • Osiris was the husband of Isis and the father of Horus, but was murdered by his brother Set, who wanted to become the Ruler.
    • Osiris then became the Ruler of the Underworld and was present at the Last Judgement of the Dead.
  • Isis
    • The Goddess was worshipped at the Temple of Isis at Philae. Isis was the wife of Osiris and together they had a son, Horus.
    • She was the Goddess of Motherhood, Children and the Home and was portrayed seated holding her infant Horus.
  • Horus
    • The God had a Temple at Edfu. He was the Son of Osiris and Isis.
    • Horus fought his uncle Set and after 80 years, defeated him to become the Ruler.
