Apuleius

  • Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis (c.124-170 CE) was a North African author from Numidia who wrote in Latin.
  • He wrote ‘The Golden Ass’, the only complete Roman novel to have survived from Antiquity.

Works

  • Metamorphoses or the Golden Ass
    • The plot follows the curiosity of the hero, Lucius, to discover and use Magic.
    • He finds a spell to change himself into a bird, but accidentally changes into an ass instead. He then embarks on a long journey full of metaphors until he is saved in the end by the Goddess Isis.
