Aqua Mirabilis

  • Aqua Mirabilis means ‘Miracle Water’ because of its healing powers. It is an Elixir or cordial, based on Alcohol, used from the 12th-20th century CE.
  • It was said to alleviate stomach ache, prevent Palsy (paralysis) in the muscles, improve the memory and revive the dying.

Recipe

  • The recipe consisted of a spirit drink infused with aromatic ingredients.
  • This could include herbs and spices such as Cloves, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cowslip flowers, Balm, Betony and Sage.

Roman Perfume

  • Perfume was widely used by the Ancient Egyptians, the Ancient Greeks and across the Roman Empire.
  • Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love, was associated with Perfume.
