Arrack

  • Arrack is a distilled alcoholic drink from Southeast Asia made in India, Indonesia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
  • Arrack was first mentioned in Sanskrit texts around 1,200 BCE.

Description

  • Arrack can be made either from sugarcane, grain, fruit or coconut flowers.
  • The name possibly comes from the Areca Palm, which produces nuts that can be fermented into a wine.
  • In Sri Lanka, Arrack is made from the coconut palm, by extracting the sap of the unopened coconut flowers.
  • These ferment very quickly. The first distillation produces a wine with around 40% alcohol content. The second distillation increases it to anywhere above 60%.
