Assur

  • Assur, also spelt Ashur, was the capital city of the Old Assyrian Empire (2025-1750 BCE), the Middle Assyrian Empire (1365-1050 BCE) and the Neo-Assyrian Empire (911-608 BCE).
  • The Ruins of Assur are located on the west bank of the Tigris near its confluence with the Lower Zab in Iraq.

History

  • It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The city was inhabited for 4,000 years until the 14th century CE.
  • Assur was located 60 miles (100km) south of the Assyrian city of Nineveh and 40 miles (65km) south of Nimrud.
