Athenaeus

  • Athenaeus of Naucratis was a Greek author who lived in Rome and wrote during the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180 CE).
  • His date of birth is unknown, but he was strangled to death in 191 CE by members of the cult of Mithras.

Works

  • ‘Deipnosophistae’
    • This means the ‘Dinner table philosophers’ and is written in 15 Books.
    • It consists of a Dialogue between 24 Diners, mostly concerning culinary matters.
    • Athenaeus mentions by name some 800 authors and 2,500 of their Works.
