Atlantic

  • The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest of the world’s oceans and is traditionally seen as the barrier between the ‘Old World’ and the ‘New World’.
  • It is divided by the Equator and the Equatorial Counter Current, into the North Atlantic and the South Atlantic. It was known to the Romans as Oceanus or Atlanticum Mare.

Sargasso Sea

  • The Atlantic holds a rotating mass of seaweed known as the Sargasso Sea.
  • In the 19th century CE, it was discovered to be the spawning grounds of the American and European Eel, despite being being 3,100 miles (5,000km) from the European coast.
