Aulus Gellius

  • Aulus Gellius (c.125-c.180 CE) was a Roman author and Grammarian.
  • He is famous for ‘Attic Nights’, a Work on Grammar, Philosophy and History.

  • ‘Attic Nights’ (177 CE)
    • Published in 20 Books, all of which have survived except Book 8, which is a Lost Work, of which only the Index exists.
    • In chapter 17.9.1-5. he mentions a lost work by Probus (232-282 CE) on Julius Caesar’s letters which contained complicated ciphers..
