Babrius

  • Babrius was a Greek author who lived in Syria and is famous for writing down Aesop's Fables in c. 200 CE.

Aesop's Fables

  • He wrote down many of the stories known today as Aesop's Fables.
  • Although Aesop lived and recounted his Fables between 620-564 BCE, they were passed on through the Oral Tradition and not written down until several hundred years later.

Phaedrus

  • Phaedrus (15 BCE – 50 CE) was the first known writer to translate Aesop’s Fables into Latin.

Avianus

  • Around 400 CE, Babrius’ Greek collection of Fables was later copied into Latin by Avianus.
