Basque

  • The Basque Language is the ancient language of the Basque People who reside in North Western Spain, around the upper River Ebro valley and western Pyrenees, which is known as the Spanish Basque Country.
  • In South Western France, the western Pyrenees up to the River Garonne is known as the French Basque Country.

The Basque Language

  • Since the 1960’s the Basque language has been standardised and is known as ‘Euskara Batua’.
  • The Basque language existed during the Roman Empire, but is much older.
  • It is discussed by such Roman writers as Pliny the ElderStrabo and Pomponius Mela.
  • Basque has been categorised by linguists as a ‘Language Isolate’, meaning it has no clear historical links with the roots of any other language.
