Battle of Hydaspes

  • The Battle of Hydaspes took place in 326 BCE between Alexander the Great and King Porus.
  • The location was on the east bank of the Jhelum River in the Punjab Region of Pakistan. It is thought to have been somewhere near the modern city of Jhelum.

Description

  • Alexander the Great decided to cross the swollen Jhelum river in order to surprise King Porus. The Tactic worked and combined with the Greek Army’s discipline and experience, Alexander was victorious.
  • But he was impressed by King Porus and re-instated him, this time as a Greek Client King.

Bucephalus

  • Bucephalus was Alexander’s favourite horse. He died after the Battle of Hydaspes in 326 BCE.
  • Alexander buried him in a great tomb and founded the town of Alexandria Bucephala on the right hand side of the Jhelum River, possibly near Jhelum.
