Battle of Arausio

  • The Battle of Arausio took place in 105 BCE on the 06 Oct between the Roman Republic and the Cimbri and Teutones. It was fought at Orange (Arausio).
  • It was a disaster for the Romans who lost 80,000 Roman Legionaries Livy and 40,000 Roman Auxiliaries (Mommsen).

The Marian Reforms

  • After this devastating defeat, not matched since the disastrous Battle of Cannae in 216 BCE, during the Punic Wars, the Roman Army clearly needed to be Reformed.
  • In response, Gaius Marius permanently transformed the recruitment and organisation of the Roman Army into a standing professional Army, and these became known as the Marian Reforms.
