- Beit She’an, also known as Beth Shean, is a city in the Northern District of Israel, located in the Beit She’an Valley which is 394 feet (120m) below sea level.
History
- It is an ancient city, referred to in The Bible as Beit She’an as part of the kingdom of Solomon.
- Under the Hellinistic Period the city was known as Scythopolis, and was one of the ten cities of the Decapolis in the Ancient World.
- It was the only city in the Decapolis to be located to the west of the river Jordan.
- The Hebrew University of Jerusalem conducted excavations in Beit She’an between 1989-1996. Over 18 consecutive ancient cities were found.
