Beit She’an

  • Beit She’an, also known as Beth Shean, is a city in the Northern District of Israel, located in the Beit She’an Valley which is 394 feet (120m) below sea level.

History

  • It is an ancient city, referred to in The Bible as Beit She’an as part of the kingdom of Solomon.
  • Under the Hellinistic Period the city was known as Scythopolis, and was one of the ten cities of the Decapolis in the Ancient World.
  • It was the only city in the Decapolis to be located to the west of the river Jordan.
  • The Hebrew University of Jerusalem conducted excavations in Beit She’an between 1989-1996. Over 18 consecutive ancient cities were found.

    • The University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum) is located in the University city, Pennsylvania, USA.
    • The museum holds Finds and Artefacts from excavations conducted between 1921-33 CE, which cover the Period between 3,000 BCE to the 7th century.
  • Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem
    • Located at 27 Sultan Suleiman Street, East Jerusalem
    • The museum also holds Finds from Beit She’an.
