Book of Nut

  • The Book of Nut describes the Ancient Egyptian Calendar.
  • It is an Almanac describing the Annual Rising and Setting of all the Stars and Planets in the Night Sky and was based on the Heliacal Rising of Stars known as Decan Stars.

Decan Stars

  • Each Decan star was separated by ten degrees, and so there were 36 Decans in the 360 degrees of the Zodiac.
  • Each of the 36 Decan star Groups was represented by a God or Goddess.
  • Every ten days a new Decan star would appear.
  • The Egyptians grouped three Decans into each of the twelve Divisions of the Zodiac.

The Start of the Egyptian Year

  • The Beginning of the Egyptian Year was marked by the Heliacal Rising of Sirius.
  • Ten days later another Decan would rise, and so on until all 36 had completed the annual cycle.
