Bourg Saint Pierre

  • Bourg Saint Pierre is a town in the Canton of Valais in Switzerland. It is on the road to the Great St. Bernard Pass.
  • A Temple of Jupiter stood beside the Roman Road which connected Martigny with Aosta in Italy over the Pass.

Roman Sites and Artefacts

  • Many fragments of the Temple of Jupiter are incorporated into the buildings of the town including A Roman Milestone showing the number XXIII.

Museums

  • St Bernard’s Hospice Monastery Museum
    • The Hospice was founded by St Bernard in 1050 CE and contains Roman Coins and votive offerings that have been excavated nearby.

Roman Great St. Bernard Pass

  • A Bronze statue of St Bernard (1905) stands on the site of Roman Mansio at the top of the Pass.
  • The Pass is famous for Napoleon having sent 40,000 troops through this Pass in May 1800, who marched unopposed past an Austrian Garrison on the Italian side who watched in amazement.
  • Napoleon executed the crossing in May, by inserting 6,000 men per day through the Pass.
  • The Pass is also famous for the use of St. Bernard dogs in rescue operations
