Brennos

  • Brennos, also known as Brennus, was a 3rd century BCE Gallic King who led a Gallic Army that invaded Greece. The Gauls left Greece and eventually founded Galatia in modern Turkey.
  • He is not to be confused with the 4th century BCE Gallic King Brennius or Brennus, who besieged Rome in 390 BCE.

The Invasion of Greece (281 BCE)

  • In 281 BCE, Brennos invaded Greece with a large Gallic army. A few years later, part of this army split off and entered Asia Minor.
  • But, in 279 BCE, Brennos committed suicide at Delphi after losing his army.

The Invasion of Galatia (270 BCE)

  • In c. 270 BCE, three Celtic Tribes from Gaul invaded Galatia under Leotarios and Leonnorios.
  • Their Army consisted of 10,000 soldiers and their families. Although they were defeated by Antiochus I, the Seleucid King of the Greek Macedonian Empire, they were permitted to found the Kingdom of Galatia and remain as his allies.

The Kingdom of Galatia (270-64 BCE)

  • The Gauls then founded the Kingdom of Galatia and became powerful allies of Antiochus the Great. The Kingdom lasted until 64 BCE when Pompey annexed the Seleucid Empire.
  • The Kingdom had twelve Tetrarchs and three hundred Senators.
  • They held a regular Council at Drynemeton, 20 miles (32km) southwest of Ancyra.

The Three Tribal Capitals

  • The Tectosages had their capital at Ancyra.
  • The Trocmii had their capital city at Tavium.
  • The Tolistobogii had their capital city at Pessinus.
